Rebekah persistently laid on the four eggs hoping that they would hatch. The first egg was due to hatch on May 19th. I projected that the first and second egg would hatch in a close time frame around May 21, since Rebekah really didn't start laying on the eggs until the second egg was laid. This is normal. It takes 24 to 28 days for the eggs to hatch once they are laid. The next egg can be laid in 24 to 48 hours. Rebekah laid four eggs all together. At this pint the eggs are over due and I gave the eggs an extra week of incubation. Still no eggs hatched and there are no Lovebird Chicks. Rebekah fought me when I took the eggs from the nest today to do a candle light test on them, the egg ultra sound test. There were no visible veins or figures in the eggs when holding them up to but not touching the candle light. The eggs were not fertilized. At this point I was advised to discard the eggs and let Kiwi and Rebekah start over. Rebekah seems to be recovering well. At least the good news is I don't have to worry about Rebekah being Egg Bound.
Egg Binding is a condition where a female bird is unable to lay an egg. The female bird will try to lay the egg, but it is stuck inside her. The female bird can die if it does not get help with getting the egg out and put on a better diet for future occurrences.
So Rebekah and Kiwi are free to let nature take its course, and we will see what happens!
